Brief

A brief on Brief

Next-gen documentation made delightful for humans and efficient for agents.

These themes can easily be created with Brief but exist only to demonstrate Brief's versatility. All design credit goes to the awesome designers at these companies. We encourage you to create your own original themes!

The documentation framework of the future#

When I imagine the documentation framework everyone will be using in five years, it excels in four core areas:

  • Delightful — It has a pleasant interface that developers actively want to read (more like Linear, less like Jira).
  • Optimized for consuming machines — It's always at the bleeding edge of ever-evolving AIO & SEO, and maximizes token efficiency & correctness for agents.
  • Boosts writer agent productivity — It's easy for an agent to work with and steers agents towards good practices like SEO-friendly content structure and hierarchy (think Rust's compiler errors).
  • Open source — It's yours, end to end.

I don't believe any existing framework meets more than two of these at the same time.

The frameworks of the present#

Hosted solutions#

Products like Mintlify and GitBook are the best at agentic usage.

Their UIs were good when they were first released but are now subpar and sluggish — there's a reason Mintlify's tagline is no longer "Beautiful out of the box".

They're also closed-source.

Mintlify: Efficient & Discoverable 85, Delightful 45, Productive 75. Closed Source.

Open source#

Frameworks like Fumadocs and Docusaurus are fully open-source (good!), but:

  • They are not maximally good at optimizing AIO & SEO;
  • Their default UIs are not incredible.
Mintlify: Efficient & Discoverable 85, Delightful 45, Productive 75. Closed Source. Fumadocs: Efficient & Discoverable 50, Delightful 61.5, Productive 35. Open Source.

Roll your own#

Companies focused on developer experience have made the best-looking docs:

Mintlify: Efficient & Discoverable 85, Delightful 45, Productive 75. Closed Source. Fumadocs: Efficient & Discoverable 50, Delightful 61.5, Productive 35. Open Source. Cloudflare: Efficient & Discoverable 67.5, Delightful 78, Productive 55. Open Source.

Even the companies with a lot of resources and the best interface teams on the planet cannot seem to produce and maintain perfect docs — it's hard.

Why we're making Brief#

We want to:

  1. Present their docs with the same quality as their core product.
  2. Maximize external agent & crawler efficiency & discoverability.
  3. Maintain their docs on autopilot.
  4. Do all this while fully owning their docs.
Brief: Efficient & Discoverable 100, Delightful 100, Productive 100. Open Source.

Now that the objective is clear, we'll briefly go over how Brief achieves this.

Page titles, descriptions, canonical URLs, and Open Graph and Twitter metadata.

  • MCP server

Let agents list, read, find, and grep your docs, with search through your configured provider.

  • llms.txt & llms-full.txt

A concise documentation index and a full-text export, with links for agents to discover both.

  • Markdown for every page

Clean .md URLs and content negotiation let agents read your content without the interface.

  • XML sitemaps

Publish page URLs, modification dates, and translated alternatives in a generated sitemap.

  • Crawler controls

Configure robots.txt, indexing, agent access, and content-use signals for search and AI.
